ITANAGAR, Nov 24:
Arunachal Pradesh is the nation's “sentinel of the east”, and its people are patriotic and “jealously guarding
the territorial integrity of the country”, Chief Minister Nabam Tuki said today.
“Sitting on the lap of the Himalayas, we are the f irst to resist any f orce against India. If any enemy eyes
India through North East, Arunachal Pradesh will stand against it f irst, like in the 1962 Sino-India war,” he
told the valedictory programme of the three-day 'Sarhad ko Swaranjali' organized by North East unit of
Sansakar Bharati at Indira Gandhi Park here.
Tuki announced that the Government would set-up a Martyrs’ Memorial in the state capital Itanagar in
memory of those soldiers killed while f ighting the invading Chinese army in 1962. He said Itanagar, which
was established as the state capital af ter 1962, owes its respect to the Martyrs who sacrif iced their lives
f or the sovereignty of the country and territorial integrity of Arunachal Pradesh.
Tuki paid rich tributes to the martyrs of the 1962 war and acknowledged the exemplary services rendered by
the Indian soldiers along the international boundaries that the state shares with neighboring countries. He
remembered martyr Jaswant Singh Rawat, hero of the Indo-China war, as a true son of the soil and said
Arunachal Pradesh as well as the whole country will always remain gratef ul f or his ultimate sacrif ice.
Felicitating wheel-chair bound Leela Devi, 94- year-old mother of martyr Jaswant Singh, who came all the
way f rom Dehradun to attend the programme as the Chief Guest, Tuki expressed gratef ulness on behalf of
the people of the state.
“Your setting f oot on the soil of Arunachal Pradesh has f urthered the sanctity of the land of the dawnlitmountains, where your brave son laid down his lif e f ighting the enemy. I salute the mother, who sacrif icedher beloved son f or this land,” he said.

it was a huge and mega event. It galvanised the people of Arunachal Pradesh and it was aa honour to be a witness to thousands of youth and elders singing 'Aye Mere Watan ke logo" and Vande Mataram as well as saluting the 92 years old mother of Jaswant Singh Rawat, a legendary martyr of the 1962 Chinese aggression. The choreography of Arunachal Pradesh young talent Delung Padung with 450 and more youth on the theme of Sarhad Ko Swaranjali was amazing. If Itanagar can produce such a spectacle of patriotism, the rest of the country should learn from it. The organisers said that they would take the momentos and wrist bands anointed with a 24-hour non-stop musical extravaganza to the families of the 1962 war martyrs numbering 3105 throughout the country, I think nothing can be more appropriate. This reminds me of the martyrs' bodies sent to their homes by the Vajpayee Govt after the Kargil war and the tide of patritism it generated in the country.
